Alpha Flagship
The Sony a1 is the epitome of a flagship camera, designed to excel in every aspect. This full-frame mirrorless camera leaves no room for compromise, offering high-resolution stills shooting, impressive 8K video recording, exceptional speed and sensitivity, and seamless connectivity for demanding professional workflows.
Exmor RS Stacked Sensor and BIONZ XR Processor
Equipped with a 50.1MP Exmor RS full-frame sensor, the Sony a1 features a stacked back-illuminated design with integrated memory. This sensor ensures outstanding image clarity, expandable sensitivity up to ISO 102400, and an impressive 15-stop dynamic range. It enables fast 30 fps shooting and phase-detection autofocus. Additionally, the sensor allows for lossless compressed raw file recording, balancing post-production flexibility with manageable file sizes. The 50.1MP resolution also facilitates full-frame 8.6K oversampling for capturing breathtaking 8K videos.
The BIONZ XR engine has undergone significant improvements, resulting in up to 8 times faster processing speeds, substantially reduced rolling shutter effects, and smoother interface and file management operations.
Up to 30 fps Shooting and Updated Shutter
Thanks to the efficient sensor design and advanced processing, the Sony a1 supports high-speed shooting at up to 30 fps with full 50.1MP resolution and complete autofocus and autoexposure capabilities when using the electronic shutter. Even with the mechanical shutter, the camera achieves a remarkable 10 fps. The generous buffer memory allows for recording up to 155 compressed raw frames or 165 JPEGs in a single burst at 30 fps.
The camera provides a blackout-free viewfinder experience, utilizing a 240 fps refresh rate for seamless eye-level viewing.
The updated electronic shutter ensures silent and vibration-free performance, supporting anti-flicker shooting under various artificial lighting conditions, even at 30 fps with autofocus speeds of 120 fps. Thanks to accelerated readout speeds, the electronic shutter flash sync can reach up to 1/200 sec. The mechanical shutter offers even faster flash sync speeds, with 1/400 sec in full-frame mode or 1/500 sec with an APS-C crop.
8K 30p and 4K 120p Video
Leveraging its high-resolution sensor and powerful processing capabilities, the Sony a1 enables UHD 8K 30p XAVC HS 10-bit 4:2:2 video recording using the full width of the sensor. This mode employs 8.6K oversampling, delivering exceptional sharpness and realism. To facilitate the handling of high-resolution footage, the camera simultaneously records low bit-rate proxy files with HD resolution for faster playback. The a1 can write 8K video at 400 Mb/s to a V90-rated UHS-II SD card or at 200 Mb/s to a V60 card. Additionally, it supports 8-bit 4:2:0 HDMI output for 8K videos.
The camera allows recording up to UHD 4K with frame rates up to 120p. At 60p, it offers full pixel readout, while at 120p, it employs a 10% crop. Oversampled 4K recording is also possible using a 5.8K capture area and Super 35 crop. The a1 supports internal 10-bit 4:2:2 sampling in all recording modes, and when recording externally via the HDMI port, it can output 16-bit raw files from a 4.3K capture, providing superior tonal reproduction and post-production flexibility.
Recording Flexibility
The a1 incorporates two codecs to cater to different workflows. XAVC HS utilizes HEVC/H.265 encoding, preserving more detail at lower bit
rates, while XAVC S-I is an intraframe codec offering consistent performance and quality at bitrates up to 600 Mb/s.
The camera’s high-speed recording at 120 fps enables 4x and 5x slow-motion video capture with playback frame rates of 30p or 24p. In Full HD resolution, an impressive effective 240p frame rate can be achieved, providing precise motion control.
With no recording time limit, the a1 allows for unlimited clip lengths. The camera’s physical design incorporates an improved heat-dissipating structure, enabling extended recording times of more than 30 minutes for 8K 30p or 4K 60p videos, or recordings at 10-bit 4:2:0.
Advanced Color Control
The a1 offers various color control options to meet professional requirements. The S-Cinetone color profile ensures distinct colors and renders healthy-looking skin tones, matching the FX9 and FX6 cameras. It draws on technology from Sony’s professional Cinema Line cameras, such as the VENICE, delivering natural mid-tones, soft colors, and well-controlled highlights.
Extensive customizable color and gamma controls allow users to adjust gamma, black level, knee, color level, and more. The camera supports the S-Log2 Gamma Curve found in high-end Sony Cinema cameras, offering up to 1300% more dynamic range than traditional REC709, enhancing post-production flexibility.
The a1 supports HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) and the BT.2020 color space, enabling recording within a wide color gamut. Additionally, it provides S-Log3 for a 15+-stop dynamic range and increased grading control in shadow to mid-tone regions of the image.
Fast Hybrid AF System
The Sony a1 boasts a Fast Hybrid AF system that covers 92% of the image area. It incorporates 759 phase-detection points and 425 contrast-detection areas, ensuring quick and precise focusing in various lighting conditions, even down to -6 EV sensitivity. This advanced focusing system is available in all recording modes, benefiting both video and still photography.
The camera’s fast sensor readout and improved processing enable up to 120 AF and AE calculations per second, resulting in faster, more responsive tracking and accurate focusing.
Real-time Tracking utilizes AI-based tracking for moving subjects, while touch tracking allows for manual subject selection. Real-time Eye AF ensures critical sharpness when capturing portraits of both humans and animals. The dedicated Real-time Eye AF Bird Mode enables automatic bird eye detection and tracking, whether the bird is in flight or perched.
The a1 offers seven-step AF transition speed and five-step AF subject shift sensitivity controls, allowing users to fine-tune the focusing system’s behavior for precise focus point transitions and smoother focusing shifts.
