Introducing the Sony a7C: Compact, Portable, and Powerful
Combining the exceptional quality and benefits of a full-frame sensor with a sleek and portable design, the Sony a7C in silver is a remarkable camera that offers hybrid recording capabilities, a 24.2MP Exmor R BSI CMOS sensor, and intelligent AF performance. With its compact form factor, it’s perfect for carrying with you all day, every day.
Exmor R Sensor, BIONZ X Processor, and 4D FOCUS
The a7C features a 24.2-megapixel Exmor R CMOS sensor with a back-illuminated design, working in tandem with the BIONZ X image processor. This powerful combination delivers high-resolution stills and videos with reduced noise and improved speed. The sensor’s structure, including a gapless on-chip lens design and anti-reflection coating, enhances light collection and detail. Thanks to the copper wiring layer, data transmission speed is significantly improved, allowing for the creation of 14-bit, high-resolution stills with a native sensitivity range of ISO 100-51200, expandable to ISO 50-204800.
Fast Continuous Shooting and Versatile Recording
The sensor and processor combination enables rapid continuous shooting at up to 10 fps at full resolution, capturing approximately consecutive JPEGs or 115 consecutive raw files. Whether using a mechanical or electronic shutter, full-time AF/AE is available.
Additionally, the a7C supports internal UHD 4K video recording with a wide dynamic range, utilizing the full width of the full-frame sensor. The BIONZ X processor, combined with a high-speed front-end LSI, ensures faster processing times and a remarkable 15-stop dynamic range at low sensitivity values.
Fast Hybrid Autofocus
Equipped with a Fast Hybrid AF system, the a7C boasts 693 phase-detection points and 425 contrast-detection areas, covering a majority of the image area. This comprehensive AF system ensures quick and precise focusing in various lighting conditions, even with sensitivity down to -4 EV. Real-time Tracking enables AI-based tracking of moving subjects, while touch tracking allows for manual subject selection. Real-time Eye AF, suitable for both humans and animals, ensures critical sharpness in portrait photography.
Video Recording
The a7C supports internal UHD 4K video recording in the XAVC S format, offering multiple frame rates up to 30 fps. With 2.4x oversampling, it achieves greater detail, and full pixel readout ensures high-quality imagery with reduced moiré and aliasing. Full HD 1080p recording is also supported at frame rates up to 120 fps. Both 4K and UHD resolutions utilize the 100 Mb/s XAVC S format within an MP4 wrapper with 4:2:0 8-bit sampling. Furthermore, high-speed recording at 120 fps enables 4x and 5x slow-motion movie capture at either 30p or 24p. The camera also offers uncompressed HDMI output for clean 4K recording with 4:2:2 8-bit sampling, using an optional external recorder.
S-Log3 and Enhanced Color and Gamma Controls
The a7C provides extensive customizable color and gamma controls, including the S-Log2 Gamma Curve found in high-end Sony Cinema cameras. This curve allows for up to 1300% more dynamic range in the video signal than traditional REC709, providing increased post-production flexibility. HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) support enables recording within a wide color gamut for producing HDR-ready content directly from the camera. Additionally, S-Log3 is available, offering a 15+-stop dynamic range with enhanced grading control in the shadow to mid-tone regions of the image.
5-Axis SteadyShot INSIDE Image Stabilization
Despite its sleek design, the a7C incorporates a 5-stop effective 5-axis SteadyShot INSIDE image stabilization system, compensating for various types of camera shake during handheld shooting of both stills and video. This enables confident use of any lens, including adapted lenses, without experiencing blur caused by camera shake. For long focal lengths, the system corrects for pitch and yaw adjustments, while horizontal and vertical shift compensation benefits macro and high-magnification imagery. All shooting styles benefit from roll compensation. The 5-axis stabilization works seamlessly with third-party lenses, adapters, and lenses with built-in optical stabilization.
Compact and Versatile Design
With its compact and lightweight body, the a7C is incredibly portable, resembling the size of an APS-C-format camera while still retaining the advantages of a full-frame system. The camera features a 0.39″-type XGA OLED electronic viewfinder with a 2.36m-dot resolution and 0.59x magnification, providing bright and clear viewing with high detail. The rear 3.0″ 921.6k-dot LCD boasts a side-open vari-angle design, allowing for easy shooting from high, low, and front-facing angles. It is also a touchscreen, providing intuitive control and playback.
The a7C’s magnesium-alloy chassis and weather-sealed design ensure durability, making it suitable for various shooting conditions. The large-capacity NP-FZ100 battery offers approximately 740 shots per charge when using the rear LCD or 680 shots per charge when using the EVF. It features a single SD memory card slot with support for UHS-II memory cards, enabling fast transfer speeds.
Ports and Interface
The a7C includes a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C port for fast and reliable tethering support. It can also be charged from the host power source while connected. The Multi Interface Shoe supports the optional ECM-B1M Shotgun Microphone or XLR-K3M XLR Adapter Kit, providing improved audio recording by sending a digital audio signal to the camera. The camera offers both 3.5mm microphone and headphone ports for enhanced audio recording control.
