The Nikon Z7 II builds upon the success of its predecessor, offering improved processing power, enhanced versatility, and a familiar design. Designed for photographers who crave exceptional detail, this camera features a high-resolution 45.7MP FX-format BSI CMOS sensor and dual EXPEED 6 image processors.
The second generation of the Z7 platform introduces a range of enhancements, without compromising the beloved features of the original camera. The sensor has been optimized to eliminate the optical low-pass filter, resulting in greater detail capture. With a native sensitivity range that extends down to ISO 64, the camera delivers lush and rich image quality. The updated processing capabilities ensure faster performance, including an accelerated 10 fps continuous shooting speed and an expanded buffer for capturing moving subjects. Additionally, the Z7 II supports UHD 4K 60p video recording and provides the option to record externally in 10-bit using N-Log or HLG (HDR) modes.
The inclusion of dual EXPEED 6 image processors brings improved buffer performance, a faster 10 fps continuous shooting rate, and significantly reduced blackout times in the viewfinder. The autofocus system has also been enhanced, now featuring Eye and Face Detection for both humans and animals in the Wide-Area AF mode, applicable to both photo and video recording.
The Z7 II introduces new features to enhance the shooting experience. Timed long exposure shooting is now possible for up to 900 seconds (15 minutes) without the need for an external remote. Dual memory card slots offer greater flexibility for file storage, with one slot compatible with CFexpress Type B cards and the other supporting SD UHS-II cards, allowing for overflow, segregated, and repetitive saving options. The camera also incorporates a USB Type-C port for in-camera charging or continuous power, enabling on-the-go charging or extended shooting sessions.
Additional improvements include the ability to switch the rotation direction of the focus ring on lenses to suit personal preference, support for HDR (HLG) mode when recording externally for instant HDR-suitable video files, and compatibility with an optional ProRes RAW upgrade for outputting ProRes RAW footage to a compatible Atomos external recorder. This upgrade provides greater flexibility for color grading with the ProRes codec and enables the output of uncompressed 12-bit raw footage over HDMI. The camera’s firmware can be updated using the SnapBridge wireless connectivity, eliminating the need for a memory card-based update system.
The Z7 II offers a range of creative shooting modes, such as Multiple Exposure, 20 different Picture Control settings, and in-camera Timelapse recording. Additionally, the camera features a Focus Shift mode, allowing for the capture of up to 300 sequential frames with the focus position shifted between exposures, perfect for focus stacking applications.
For extended battery life and improved handling, the camera is compatible with the optional MB-N11 Power Battery Pack.
