Introducing the Sony FX6, a compact cinema camera designed to deliver versatile, cine-style imaging in a small form factor. With its ability to capture up to 15+ stops of dynamic range, Sony’s S-Cinetone gamma for film-like skin tones, and advanced recording capabilities, the FX6 is ideal for a range of applications, from supplementing larger cinema cameras to operating independently for documentary, gimbal, and drone shoots.
The FX6 features a 4K full-frame Exmor R sensor combined with a BIONX XR engine, enabling highly sensitive capture in various settings. It offers a base ISO of 800 and a high-sensitivity mode of ISO 12800 for low-light scenes. The 10.2 MP sensor utilizes back-side illumination for exceptional low-light performance, 627 focal plane points for speedy phase-detection autofocus, and compatibility with full-frame lenses, resulting in immersive, high-quality imagery. The sensor’s fast scan speed minimizes rolling shutter artifacts and supports high frame rates and quick autofocus responses.
Weighing just under 2 lb, the FX6 is significantly lighter than the FX9, and its compact body, measuring 6 x 4.6″, rivals the size of the S35-sensor Sony FS5. While it seamlessly integrates into a professional cine workflow, the FX6 offers features that cater to single-operator users. These include fast and accurate phase-detection autofocus with Face Detection and real-time Eye autofocus, auto and manual ND filter settings for quick exposure adjustment, and a 3.5″ LCD monitor with touchscreen access to key menu settings and flexible positioning for comfortable operation. Firmware update v1.10 further enhances stability and introduces 100p and 120p options for Slow and Quick Motion recording when using RAW or RAW and XAVC-I codecs.
As part of Sony’s Cinema Line, the FX6 shares core imaging features with cameras like the VENICE and FX9. It offers a full-frame sensor, film-like color science, a compact and lightweight design, professional connector interfaces, and advanced autofocus options. Compared to the FX9, the FX6 matches its video capture capabilities up to DCI 4K60 and provides the same S-Cinetone, S-Log3, and HLG gamma choices. It also supports 16-bit raw output, features a Sony E lens mount, offers 1/4 to 1/128 ND options, and includes 2-channel XLR audio inputs.
The FX6 introduces several improvements over the FX9. These include an expanded ISO range of 320 to 409,600, top frame rates of 120p in 4K and up to 240p in HD, dual card slots compatible with CFexpress Type A and SDXC cards, and a more versatile media recording options. The camera’s magnesium alloy chassis ensures durability and effective heat dispersion for extended recording sessions. It also features reliable sealing to enhance dust and moisture resistance.
With its 4-channel audio recording capability, the FX6 enables simultaneous recording from dual XLR inputs, the multi-interface shoe input, and the built-in stereo microphone. The camera offers a range of professional input and output interfaces, including 12G/6G/3G-SDI output, HDMI output, 12-bit raw output via SDI, and timecode input and output. The built-in Wi-Fi module allows for remote monitoring, focus, iris, and zoom control using the Content Browser Mobile app on a compatible smartphone or remote control.
The FX6’s modular design allows for a grab-and-go approach, making it suitable for gimbal or drone use. It can also be paired with optional accessories such as a smart grip and smart handle for handheld shooting. The camera supports the Content Browser Mobile app for remote control and monitoring via
Wi-Fi connectivity.
