Versatile and Compact Standard Zoom
Introducing the Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II, a refined iteration of the fast standard zoom lens that delivers exceptional performance in a smaller and lighter package. This lens incorporates a range of optical enhancements, focusing improvements, and enhanced handling, catering to both photo and video applications. With these upgrades, it stands as the most well-rounded G Master zoom lens to date.
G Master Image Quality
The optics of this zoom lens have been meticulously redesigned to rival the performance of prime lenses, resulting in outstanding resolution, clarity, and bokeh quality.
The bright f/2.8 constant aperture enables photographers to capture stunning images even in low-light conditions, while also offering creative control over depth of field.
To ensure superior image quality, two ED (extra-low dispersion) and two Super ED elements effectively minimize chromatic aberrations and color fringing, resulting in exceptional clarity and color accuracy.
The lens features five aspherical elements, including two extreme aspherical elements (XA), which minimize spherical aberrations, distortion, and the undesirable “onion ring” bokeh effect.
With the implementation of Nano AR Coating II and a new optical design, flare and ghosting are effectively controlled by reducing internal reflections.
An 11-blade aperture diaphragm contributes to smooth and circular bokeh at all aperture settings.
Faster AF and Floating Focus Mechanism
The redesigned focusing system of the lens brings improvements in focusing speed, close-up shooting, and overall control.
Four XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors significantly enhance focusing performance compared to the predecessor’s DDSSM system, resulting in faster, quieter, and more precise autofocus, perfectly suited for both photography and videography.
The increased AF speed allows for improved subject tracking, even when working with fast-moving subjects. It supports shooting at up to 30 fps, maintains full AF when stopped down, and allows focus tracking while changing the zoom position.
A floating focusing mechanism ensures consistent image quality throughout the focusing range, which is especially important for close-up photography. The lens achieves a minimum focusing distance of 8.3″ at the 24mm position or 11.8″ at the 70mm position, with a maximum magnification of 0.32x at the 70mm position.
The internal focusing design enhances focusing performance and keeps the overall length of the lens constant during operation.
Improved Control and Video Capabilities
The lens has been updated to cater to the needs of both photo and video shooters, offering improved control and video-specific features.
Minimized focus breathing, focus shift, and axial shift during zooming ensure greater compositional accuracy in video recording, preventing unwanted movements and changes in the angle of view.
It supports the Breathing Compensation function available in select cine-line and Alpha cameras.
The XD Linear Motors operate quietly, enabling the use of autofocus during video recording without any disruptive noise.
The Linear Response MF provides a natural and intuitive manual focus control experience.
The manual aperture ring can be de-clicked for smooth and silent iris pulls, and the zoom smoothness can be adjusted to achieve the desired torque.
